What Causes Anxiety and Panic Attacks?
A panic attack is defined as a brief episode of intense anxiety, which manifests as physical sensations characteristic of fear. These sensations may include a racing heartbeat, shortness of breath, dizziness, trembling, and muscle tension. Panic attacks can occur unexpectedly and frequently, often without any apparent external triggers.
The duration of a panic attack may range from a few minutes to half an hour, although the associated physical and emotional effects may persist for several hours. It is estimated that up to 35 percent of the population will experience a panic attack at some point in their lives.
Additionally, these episodes may be referred to as anxiety attacks. In the absence of appropriate treatment, recurrent and prolonged panic attacks can significantly impair an individual’s ability to function, leading to avoidance of various situations, including leaving home or being alone.
